Wordless Wednesday: Sweet Potatoes

Shelby's First Solid Food
I'm ready, Daddy!
I'm not so sure about this....
Maybe it's not so bad after all...
This stuff is good!
Quit taking pictures, and give me some more!

What a Day

What a day we had on Friday. I'd really rather not re-live the events of that day (it really wasn't that terrible, but definitely not something I'd like to do again!), but since I brought it up in my last post I figured I could give you the short version* of the story...

Derek was on call Thursday night and texted me from the hospital early Friday morning asking me if I wanted to go to New Orleans. My initial thought was: "WHAT?!" Then I vaguely remembered him telling me about a month ago that there was a conference in New Orleans that he might have to go to. Obviously, it was a very last-minute thing. The conference (or at least the part of it that Derek had to attend) was only about 2 hours. So we figured it would be a quick little get-away that would be totally do-able with Shelby. And we figured if it ended up being like the worst case scenario, we could bail at any time and be home in 90 minutes. So Derek left the hospital earlier than normal on a post-call day and got home at about 11am. He slept for about an hour, then we packed up the car and headed out for New Orleans at about 1pm on Friday afternoon.

Shelby napped on the way there, then Shelby and I walked around the hotel during Derek's conference and chatted with him and some other people on their breaks. She was an absolute angel the whole afternoon. Everyone kept stopping us to tell us how cute and happy she was. The day was going better than imagined. The conference ended up lasting a little longer than planned, but Shelby was a trooper till the very end. We scooted out of the conference about 6:30 (which is when Shelby is normally getting ready for bed), but she was still hanging tough. So we quick ran up to our hotel room so Derek could change out of his uniform then we grabbed a quick bite to eat.

Fast-forward to 8:15...we put Shelby down for the night in her pack n play in the hotel bathroom. (Sounds odd, I know. But this way we could keep the tv on and chit-chat a bit without disturbing her too much.) Fast-forward to 10pm..we had just turned off the tv to hit the hay for the night (I know, we're wild and crazy) and the crying commences. If we were at home, we would have just let her cry it out and she probably would have gone right back to sleep in a few minutes...but we didn't want to be those people disturbing the whole hotel. So we rocked her back to sleep and got in bed. This cycle was repeated again at 11pm. And midnight. After the 3rd time, we decided enough was enough and packed up to head back to Biloxi in the middle of the night. At the time, we didn't know what the problem was..if Shelby was having trouble sleeping b/c she didn't know where she was, if the noises of the hotel was bothering her (we were in a busy hotel and our room was near the elevator..but she's done well in hotels before, so who knows?!), or what. In retrospect, it could have been that she was still a bit uncomfortable/fussy from her 6 month shots that she had two days earlier. (When she has shots, I usually try to give her tylenol drops 3 times/day for 48hrs afterward to keep her comfortable. I gave her a dose before we left for New Orleans but forgot to bring them with us to give her before bed that night.)

Shelby slept the whole way home, and we pulled up in our driveway around 2:30am. By this time Shelby was beyond confused at what in the world was going on and proceeded to cry and cry and cry for almost two hours. It was rough, my friends. She finally conked out about 4:30am and slept till 8am on Saturday morning. Needless to say, all three of us were exhausted. We stayed home the rest of the weekend to relax and recuperate. And we are all doing much better because of it! Friday was definitely not a fun day, but it was a learning experience for us. And we survived! :) And thankfully, Shelby went right back to her routine on Saturday and slept for 11.5 hours that night. :)

And now you know the story. ;) Hope everyone's week is off to a good start. Happy Monday, Friends!

*Obviously, I don't know what the meaning of a "short version" is. Maybe this is why my Wordless Wednesday posts are never really wordless?! Ha!

Top Five Friday..A Day Late

So I had planned to get this post up yesterday since it is a Top Five Friday after all, but the day ended up going nothing as planned. In fact, the story is a whole other blog post in and of itself. But back to the Top Five...here are five things I am loving right now...

5. The Biggest Loser.
This is the first season I have ever watched this show, but I am loving it! Does anyone else watch it?? I so wish that Hannah & Rulon would have chosen to bring back Arthur this week to be a part of their new team.
4. 30 Day Shred. Going along with The Biggest Loser, I bought the Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred DVD and I am really enjoying it. I love that it's a quick workout, so I have time to work out, shower, and get a few chores done before nap time is over.
3. Sound machine. Shelby sleeps with this sound machine in her room, and it is perfect for blocking out background noise. She always sleeps with it on, and it's small enough to just throw in the suitcase or diaper bag when we travel.
2. Mandy & Randy. Love these handmade wooden heirloom toys. A sweet friend of mine sent us an "S" rattle for Shelby...she loves it!
1. Diapers.com. A sweet neighbor of ours recently shared with us the wonderfulness that is the diapers.com website. You can get diapers (and a whole lot more!) at a much cheaper rate than in stores..not to mention, you get 30% off all orders for the first three months and free two-day shipping on orders over $50 (which is just like two big packages of diapers). So now we don't have to worry about clipping coupons for diapers and lugging them home from the store...they arrive right on our doorstep! Genius.

We are worn out from our crazy day yesterday, so we are staying close to home and relaxing all weekend long. Hope you are having a wonderful weekend! :)

Six Months!

How is it possible that my baby girl is already a half year old?!
Sweet Shelby turned six months old last week on St. Patrick's Day.
We had her six month check-up yesterday afternoon and found out she now weighs 18 pounds & 8 ounces, which is not even 2 pounds more than what she weighed at 4 four months old. Perhaps we are slowing down a bit in the weight department..ha! Shelby was in the 90's for all of her percentiles {weight, height, & head circumference}. She also had shots at this appointment and cried hard for about 15-30 seconds {with real tears running down her cheeks..talk about breaking a mama's heart!}, but then went right back to smiling. Shelby was pretty fussy yesterday evening from the shots, but fortunately we scheduled a late afternoon appointment. So by the time we were finished with the appointment, shots, and stopping by the pharmacy on the way out...all we had time for once we got home was a bath, nursing, and bed. Derek took Shelby upstairs to rock her to sleep, and she was out in less than two minutes! Those shots wore her out!
The pediatrician gave us the green light to start trying more solids. So we plan to let Miss Shelby taste some veggies in the coming days!
Here is what Miss Shelby is up to these days...
--on a very good routine, which does this Type A mama's heart some good! She wakes up at 6 every morning (a little early for my liking...but I can't complain b/c she is SLEEPING THROUGH THE NIGHT!!), takes naps at 8am & 1pm that both last about 2 hours or so, and goes to bed at 6:30 or 7pm. Shelby nurses 4 times a day (when she wakes up at 6am, when she wakes up from her morning nap, when she wakes up from her afternoon nap, and right before bed. (This is the Babywise schedule...it didn't work for us until Shelby was about 2.5 months old...but now we are religious with it, and it works like a charm.) She also eats cereal once a day.
--sleeping through the night for 11 hours. :)
--still loves to be swaddled for naptime & bedtime
--enjoys rice cereal, but is a very messy eater!
--sitting up on her own! :)
--loves reading books before naptime. I usually sit her up in the glider in her bedroom when we read stories. I always put her down leaning against the pillow, but now she is leaning forward to get as close to the pictures in the book as she can. It's the most precious thing in the world. :)
--still has not rolled from her back to her front...and for that matter, she hasn't rolled from her tummy to her back in a looooong time. The pediatrician didn't seem too worried about it and said that babies of Shelby's size sometimes take longer to roll over b/c they have a lot more mass to move around. ;)
--no teeth yet!
--had her first little sunburn on her cheeks this month. This mommy promptly ran to the store and bought 75spf, which we now apply every afternoon before heading out for our daily stroll & trip to the swings. Shelby has very fair skin, and the Biloxi sun is strong!
--wants to hold/get her hands on anything we have in our hands...cups, cell phones, remote controls, you name it..she wants it!
--likes to hear the ABC's, nursery rhymes, or other songs when she's fussy :)
--loves looking at her reflection in the mirror!

Shelby, we love the sight of your sweet smile and big beautiful blue eyes, the sound of your infectious laughter and high-pitched {and ear-piercing} squeals, the touch of your little hands as you reach out to grab our face, and every other little thing about you. We love you!

Wordless Wednesday: A Gift

My mom hand-delivered a belated birthday gift to me this weekend while she was here visiting...
{image from james avery}
It is a beautiful charm from James Avery to add to my charm bracelet. I love it! It was hard to get a good picture of the charm, but this gives you a pretty idea of the monogram on the bottom of the shoes...
Thanks again, Mom! :)
Happy Wednesday, Everyone!!

Ten Days

How is it possible that I have not blogged in the last ten days?! Lots has happened since I last posted! Let's see...
---A certain little girl turned six months old on the 17th! However, due to a busy couple of days, we waited to schedule her 6 month appointment & shots until tomorrow. So I will get her 6 month post up sometime after that. It's hard to believe she's already a half year old. Crazy!
--My parents came to visit for a few days. We love when they come to visit. Derek & I always have so much fun with them, and I'm pretty sure they enjoy spending time with their grandbaby.
--The picture above was taken at the Keesler Air Show this weekend. The Blue Angels (among other planes) were here on base to perform. Since we live on base, we got to watch them practice on Thursday & Friday and then perform on Saturday & Sunday. We thought that having very loud planes flying very close to our house might get old after four days of it, but it didn't! Every time we heard the planes, we all gravitated outside. It's just so awe-inspiring to watch..especially the Blue Angels. If you ever have the opportunity to see them, GO! Here are a few pictures that my neighbor captured of the Blue Angels that give you a good idea of how amazing {and how close to our house!} they were...
Here are Shelby & Derek watching the Blue Angels from the front of our neighborhood on Saturday afternoon. :)
Derek was on call on Sunday, but the rest of us {my parents, Shelby, & me} headed over to the Air Show to get an up-close look at all of the planes. While my mom and I went up in a C-17...
...my dad stayed with Miss Shelby.
--While my parents were in town, my aunt, uncle, & cousins swung by for a quick visit as well. They were on their way to a cruise taking off from New Orleans, and since Biloxi is just a quick drive over from NOLA they were able to squeeze in a visit with us on their vacation! We were so thrilled to get to see them, catch up, and introduce them to Shelby!
--Derek & I got to go out on a much-needed date night while my parents babysat last night. We went out to dinner & ran a few errands...nothing special. But it was so nice to just have some uninterrupted conversation and down time together. And my parents stayed with Miss Shelby one afternoon so I could get my hair cut..it's amazing how relaxing & refreshing a simple hair cut felt. {Oh, the things you take for granted before being a Mommy!} Thank you, Grammy & Grampy!!

Okay, I think we're all caught up now. :) My parents just left this morning {it's always hard to see them go}, so Shelby & I have been busy today getting the house back in order after a fun couple of days! We have Kindermusik class this evening, and Derek might be able to join us for the first time! If he gets to come, that means there will be two extra hands on deck..so someone can handle Shelby and the other can handle the camera. ;) So hopefully I'll be able to share some pictures of Miss Shelby & her friends at music class with you soon!

Hope everyone is having a terrific Tuesday! :)

Meet Shelby's sweet new cousin, Ellyson!
Couldn't you just eat her up?! Neither Shelby nor Miss Elly paid any attention to their due dates. Shelby was 1.5 weeks late, and Elly was 1.5 weeks early! Derek, Shelby, & I made the drive up to Birmingham to meet our niece and visit with Maleah (Derek's sister) & Lucas (her hubby). It was so good to see them! And we are just thrilled that our sweet girls are so close in age..I'm looking forward to lots of cousin bonding in the near future! :) Here's their first photo together..I love this photo of the girls! {However if I'm being honest, Shelby's hand just accidentally bumped into Elly's head...and for about 2.5 seconds, it looked so sweet like she was patting Elly's head. But then the hair pulling began!}
Shelby is already bullying her little cousin! ;)

It's kind of hard to tell in the pictures, but they are wearing matching shirts that I got from this Etsy shop. I think the shirts turned out so cute! Shelby's says "big cousin Shelby" and Elly's says "little cousin Elly." Here's another shot of Shelby's shirt as it's kind of hard to see with her sitting in the Bumbo...
Welcome to the world, Miss Elly! We love you so much!

Wordless Wednesday: Daddy's Girl

Okay, I don't think I can ever do a Wordless Wednesday post without any words at all. I just felt like now was an appropriate time to share the nicknames that our little girl has acquired. :) Right after we brought her home the hospital, Derek called her "Shelbo"...and it just kind of stuck. Well, eventually Shelbo evolved into just Bo. And now we often call her "Bo-Bo" or even "The Bo." What can we say...they're certainly not cutesy or girly nicknames, but they definitely fit. :)

Happy Mardi Gras!

Happy Mardi Gras!

I never really celebrated this holiday before, but it is a BIG deal here on the Gulf Coast. I always thought it was just New Orleans, but apparently I was wrong. Since moving here, I have learned that Mardi Gras in the US actually started in Mobile..who knew?! And apparently, it's not just the day of Mardi Gras..there's a whole Carnival Season that starts on the 6th of January. People, it really is true--you learn something new every day. {Hopefully, I'm not the only person in the world that didn't know all of this stuff!} That is one thing I like about moving to different parts of the country--learning about different cultures along the way.

And because I am still a Kindergarten teacher at heart that has to bite my tongue out in public at times when I feel the urge to say "inside voices please," I like to wear clothing that coordinates with the holidays. Lame, I know. Now, don't get me wrong--I don't have any holiday sweaters. I'm not that bad! But I do like to make sure I always have pink and red on for Valentine's Day or wear my Dr. Seuss tshirt on March 2nd for his birthday. So naturally, I put on a green tank top and a purple shirt over it today in honor of Mardi Gras. {If I'm being honest, I actually had on a yellow tank at first..and then I realized that it made me look like an LSU fan, so I traded it in for a green tank..much better.} Anyone else out there color-coordinate their wardrobe for the day of a holiday? Hopefully I'm not the only nerd that does this. ;)

Love/Hate Relationship

I have a love/hate relationship with Pottery Barn. I love all of their stuff. I love getting the catalogs in the mail and leisurely perusing through them..I often wish I could have every single thing in the catalog. But I don't need every single thing that I like in the catalog, nor is it necessary to spend that much money on certain things...b/c let's face it, PB can be a bit pricey at times. But sometimes, the price is worth it...for example, we bought all of Shelby's nursery furniture from PBK and we have been very pleased with it. But other times, their things are not worth the price...

This is the hate part of the relationship--high prices doesn't always equal high quality. Every now and again, I allow myself to splurge on something from PB. For instance, I have always liked their Christmas stockings...and we needed new stockings this year b/c of the new addition to our family. So I splurged and bought 3 new stockings and had them monogrammed. I could have just gotten stockings at Target, but I paid the extra money hoping for beautiful, quality stockings. Well, the stockings were nice enough...but the monograms looked like crap. So frustrating. {I ended up returning them and got 3 replacement stockings, but I had them monogrammed somewhere else.} Well, apparently I didn't learn my lesson from that bad experience. A while back, I wanted a new wreath hanger. I fell in love with this one from PB...
{picture from potterybarn.com}
After anxiously awaiting its arrival in the mail, I was so disappointed when it arrived. The engraving was not so hot, and to make matters worse it didn't even fit over the door! Argh. So, I ended up getting this one from Target recently...it's only a fraction of the price, and the best part is that it does what it's supposed to..it actually fits over the door. What a concept!
Then, I just checked the mail this afternoon..and what was in the mailbox?? The PBK catalog, of course. And there are the cutest Easter baskets. Hopefully I will be able to resist the temptation..b/c with my luck it probably wouldn't turn out the way I'd hoped it would. I have been searching on Etsy for a cute monogrammed basket for Shelby..does anyone have any recommendations??
