Newborn Photos

We had newborn photos of Miss Shelby taken this morning. It was a little bit of a stressful/anxiety-provoking situation for Derek & me b/c it's a little tricky taking photos of a baby who's not even two weeks old yet! But Shelby did really well, and we were so thankful to have her Grammy there to help us keep her as content as possible!
We tried to take a series of pictures with Shelby on her tummy, which we thought would be easy b/c she wouldn't be able to move from that position. From the developmental milestones chart that Derek has from his pediatric rotation, we knew that babies usually roll over from front to back at 2-3 months. Well, our baby girl decided that she was ready to roll over at 13 days old! At first, we thought it was a fluke..but after she did it for the third time, we were convinced! Shelby took her sweet time coming into the world, but now she's ready and rarin' to go!
If you'd like to see the rest of the newborn photos we had taken today, here's the link. The password is "smith." Enjoy! :)

Firsts with Shelby

We had our first projectile spit-up this week that got all over Shelby and me, so we naturally documented said occasion. This special event was closely followed by Shelby's first bath. (We'd only given her sponge baths previously, but her umbilical cord had just fallen off.)
She was so good for her bath..she liked it about a million times more than a sponge bath!
Notice the change in towels from the picture above to the picture below. Apparently the warm bath relaxed her so much, she decided to pee all over the towel! Another first for us! :)
And how pitiful is this face?! She didn't like being cold...she wanted to stay in the warm water!
Looking forward to many more firsts with our baby girl! :)

Shelby Meets her Grandparents!

Derek's dad & step-mom made the drive to Biloxi this weekend to meet their new grandbaby!
We really enjoyed our time with them! And we were so thankful for some cooler temperatures during their visit! (And by cooler, I mean highs in the mid-eighties as opposed to the the nineties! We're still getting adjusted to Biloxi's weather!) Thanks to Mother Nature, we got to take a few pictures outside on the playground behind our house!
On another note, I am still working on Shelby's birth story...I'll get it posted as soon as I can! But here's one more cute shot of Shelby just to hold you over until next time. :)
Happy Monday, Everyone! :)

Happy One Week Birthday, Shelby!

It's hard to believe, but Shelby is a whole week old already! And she's just getting cuter by the day...
Happy One Week Birthday, baby girl! We love you!

I will try to post Shelby's birth story later this weekend if I can find the time, so be sure to stop by! Happy Friday, Everyone! :)

High Maintenance

Shelby is definitely high maintenance, but we sure do love her!

Wordless Wednesday...Shelby Style

Happy Wednesday! Enjoy a wordless (okay..wordless with the exception of a few captions!) post full of precious pictures of our baby girl! :)

Spending quality time with her grandparents!
Her first sponge bath at home! Here we are rinsing her hair in the sink.
Napping :)
Hopefully these pictures make your Wednesday a little bit sweeter! :)

Shelby Fix

Here's your Shelby fix for the day! :)
We had our first doctor's visit today, and this was little Shelby at her appointment! They checked her weight, which was 7 pounds & 10 ounces. So she's only down 4 ounces from her birth weight..we were so proud of her for that!

She was an angel while we were there. She only started to cry on our way out of the hospital b/c she had an explosion in her diaper. So we had our first experience changing a diaper on the go! We've got lots more "firsts" in our future now that Shelby is here...and we are so looking forward to every minute of it!

She's Here!

Shelby Schumacher Smith is here! :)
She arrived via emergency C-section (the doctors didn't like the results of the non-stress test on Friday morning) on Friday, September 17th at 1:31pm. She weighed in at 7 pounds, 14 ounces and measured 20.5 inches long.
We came home yesterday (Sunday), and we're all doing well! We were blessed to have lots of family and 2 of our new good friends here in Biloxi come visit us in the hospital. Here's a shot of some of our visitors...
And we are so thankful to have my parents staying with us for a few days to help us get adjusted to our new life as a family of three!
When I find the time, I will post more pictures & share the full story of Shelby's arrival into the world. But for now, I will leave you with one more picture of the cutest girl in the world!

Still Pregnant!

Just wanted to let everyone know the outcome of my doctor's appointment this morning...still no signs of a baby yet! My next appointment is scheduled for Friday morning when they will administer a non-stress test to make sure everything is still okay with the baby. Then, if there's still no baby by Monday, they have me penciled in on their calendar for an induction Monday afternoon. So by this time next week, we should definitely have a baby girl in our arms!

Thanks for checking in on me, friends! I'll keep you posted! :)

Enjoying Family Time!

My mom & sister made the drive from GA to Biloxi on Sunday. Derek & I are SO enjoying having them here. While Derek was at work today, us girls went out to lunch, did a little shopping, and then picked up some cupcakes from Frosting for tonight's dessert. They were DELIGHTFUL! :)
And for those of you who may be wondering...still no baby yet! I have my 41 week doctor's appointment tomorrow morning, so we will see what happens! I'll try to post an update sometime tomorrow after my appointment.

Hope everyone's week got off to a good start today! :)

Laundry Room Make-Over

At our condo in VA, we didn't have a laundry room...just a laundry closet, if you will. We just had a little closet with just enough room to fit a stackable washer & dryer.
In our new house, we have a decent-sized laundry room..it even has a window, sink, and cabinets! But with all that space comes lots of bare white walls. (I don't know if I've mentioned this on the blog before or not, but we can't paint the walls in our house. Since it's a brand-new house on base with fresh paint, the paint is under a two-year warranty...so no painting for two years. We were really bummed about this at first, but it saved us a lot of the headaches that come with painting...and it forced us to be creative with our decor in the house.) After reading Kate's crafty post over at Barefoot Daydreams, I was inspired to spruce up our laundry room a bit this weekend! It was a quick, easy make-over..but I am very pleased with the outcome!

We have two paintings made by Derek's grandfather that didn't quite "go" with any of the rooms in our house, but we really wanted to hang them...so we found them a home in the laundry room. Here's a look at one of the paintings that we hung next to the cabinets...
To complete the room, I followed Kate's lead and purchased a set of wooden letters at Michael's to spell out the word "laundry." We (and by "we," I mean Derek) spray painted the letters black, then I hot glued some olive green ribbon (I chose this color to tie in the greens that are in the two paintings) on the back of the letters to hang them from the wall.
Here's another look at the letters from the doorway to the laundry room..and you can get a peek at the other painting made by Derek's grandfather that we hung on the wall to the right.
And last but not least, here's a peek at the organization system I use for my cleaning supplies. Somehow, we ended up with an extra over-the-door shoe organizer when we were unpacking from the move. I don't know where it came from...maybe my classroom?? Anyhow, I didn't want it to go to waste, so I used it to organize my cleaning supplies!
This is on the back of the door to the laundry room, so you can't see it from the rest of the house. I used to keep my cleaning supplies in a cabinet, and I would always be knocking things over trying to get the one bottle I wanted. Now, I can see all of my supplies at a glance and easily get to what I want quickly. I also keep a bucket in one of the cabinets so if I'm cleaning a bathroom on the other side of the house, I can load up all of the supplies I need in my bucket....then return them to their handy-dandy spot in the organizer.

So, there's our quick & easy make-over to the laundry room! And what made it even better was the price! The only things we had to buy were the wooden letters from Michael's and the ribbon...can't beat that!

Hope everyone is enjoying the weekend!

Happy Due Date Day!

Happy Due Date Day to us! :) This day feels very anti-climatic right now..haha. We've been counting down to this day for so long, and now it's here..but it feels like just a regular day! I had a doctor's appointment this afternoon, and nothing has really changed. I haven't felt any contractions throughout the pregnancy (Braxton Hicks or real) as of yet, so there's no real reason for the doctor or us to believe that it's going to be baby time just quite yet..but she did say that spontaneous labor is always a possibility.

My next appointment is scheduled for Tuesday (the 14th) morning when I will be 41 weeks. If the baby hasn't come by then, the doctor said we will probably go ahead and schedule an induction. So, for now, we will just continue enjoying life as a family of 2 and anticipate the arrival of our baby girl! We can't wait to meet her! :)

Labor Day Weekend

Derek was fortunate enough to get Friday and Monday off of work making it a glorious four-day weekend for us! Since our care-free weekends just the two of us are coming to an end, we certainly made the most of this one! Here's a re-cap of our fun-filled weekend...
  • Thursday evening: dinner with friends! We've been going out to eat once a week with Derek's friends from work, and each week we try a new local place. It's been really fun, and we've found lots of great new (well, new to us!) places that we might not have tried otherwise.
  • Friday: We had our maternity pictures taken in the morning. Then, Derek did some studying (he takes Step 3 of the Boards at the end of the month) while I worked on our baby book, and later in the afternoon we made a trip to the commissary together. We capped off the day with a date to Mary Mahoney's...it was wonderful!
  • Saturday: We watched college football all.day.long. And we loved every minute of it!
  • Sunday: We went to the beach for a couple of hours, then headed out for the evening with our neighbors! We tried a new place for dinner, went to see the movie The Other Guys, and then stopped off for some ice cream at Bop's. We were surprised to learn when we moved here that Biloxi doesn't have any "chain" ice cream places like Cold Stone or Dairy Queen (the only exception is that there's a Baskin Robins inside the BX on base), but Bop's gives those places a run for their money...it's quite tasty!!
  • Monday: It was a low-key day spent around the house. We grilled some hot dogs for dinner and enjoyed watching the Boise State/VT game.
I have a doctor's appointment tomorrow afternoon, so I'll try to post an update sometime after that! Hope everyone has a great short week! :)

Tour of the Nursery

Finally...here are a few pics of the nursery, as promised! The bedroom that we are using for the nursery is fairly small, and the furniture we picked out is on the large side (the changing table is pretty average I think..but the glider & crib both take up a LOT of room)..so there's not really a whole lot to the room, but we're very pleased with how it turned out! Okay, now for the pictures....
This is hanging over the light switch when you walk in the room. I actually had this in my bedroom in my Athens apartment during college. I just happened to come across it when I was unpacking boxes after arriving in Biloxi and thought it was the perfect fit for the nursery!
Add Image
It's hard to tell from the picture above, but here is what is hanging above the glider/next to the window. It was part of a gift from some of my students & their parents. (Sorry for the glare!)
We hung the ABC collage that we purchased off of Etsy above the changing table. (Again, sorry for the awful glare!)
Next up is the crib..the letters above it are the ones that Derek stained to match the furniture. The lamp in the corner was a last-minute purchase, but we're so glad we got it!
And a close-up of the crib & bedding....
And the other side of the crib is below. We're using the green wicker basket as the hamper. The painting on the right side of the photo was made by Derek's step-mom, and you can make out part of the bow holder that I made on the left.
Well, there you have it, folks! The nursery is as ready as it's going to be. Oh, and last but not least, here's a shot of the bassinet in our bedroom all ready and waiting for our baby girl.
The quilt hanging over the edge of the bassinet was made by my friend Sarah's mom for our baby girl. The colors match our pink/green color scheme perfectly!

If you haven't already seen it, I put a link to our maternity photos in the post below, so be sure to check it out! :)

Friendships

I've been thinking a lot about friendships lately...missing the good friends we made while living in Virginia and thankful for all the new friendships we are building here in Biloxi.

But there's nothing like old friends....
Two of our very favorite people who now live in Del Rio, TX stopped by for a short, but oh so sweet visit last night on their way to Destin. There is nothing like time spent with old friends. There's something special about a friendship that withstands the test of time and distance. Whenever we see them, we pick up right where we left off no matter how long it's been. So very thankful for their friendship!
