May 2024

Today is the last day of May, and we are officially in full-blown summer mode. Everyone slept in {the first child to emerge from their bedroom was at 9:30am}, I snuck out of the house for a quick lunch date with Derek, the kids & I biked to a nearby playground for a bit, and the kids are now settled in on the couch with popcorn for their Friday movie as I type. This is the life!

As I was looking back through our May photos, I realized that we sure crammed a lot into one month--spirit days galore, recitals, concerts, celebrating the end of the school year, road trip to Homer, and the start to summer! Here's a quick peek at our days....

Derek, Shelby, and Brady did a color run on base one Saturday morning while I took Hadley to her Eagle River Spinners meeting. Everyone had so much fun!

Perks of homeschooling...a mid-afternoon trip to Soda & Smore for a pick-me-up!

More spring-like weather {our temps range from lows in the 40s to highs in the upper 50s and occasionally breaking 60 degrees here & there} has led to more afternoon runs, and these views can't be beat!

Another perk of homeschooling...we met Derek on base for a picnic lunch & playtime one afternoon. Ship Creek runs through a park on base, and they had fun exploring.

The best Mother's Day gifts!!! We celebrated the day with Jason's Donuts for breakfast {poor Derek had to wait in line for two hours to get said donuts!!}, cards & gifts, church, a quick lunch at home, then we headed to Shelby's piano recital & dinner at Qdoba. It was a perfect day!

{Shelby wanted her hair curled for the fourth & final school dance of the year}

The final orchestra concert of the school year had a "summer vibes" theme, so all of the kids were encouraged to dress the part. Shelby had the distinct honor to accompany her orchestra on the piano for their opening song of the concert, which was "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." We have attended lots of orchestra performances over the past two years, but this one definitely took the cake! It was phenomenal!

{Shelby's orchestra director surprised her with flowers after the concert to thank her for the accompaniment}

{I think this particular spirt--it's hard to keep track when there are so many!!--was for Wacko Day, and Shelby's 7th grade team was red}

{cowboys vs. aliens spirt day?!}

Shelby's youth group at church hosted a super fun Clash of the Classes event. Each grade level decked out in a different color {7th grade was blue!}, and then they battled it out!

{all of these photos uploaded out of order, so this was actually from the very beginning of May during one of Shelby's piano lessons...all that snow is finally gone!}

{library runs are our jam!}

One random weekend afternoon, Derek said he wanted to lay down & rest for a few minutes. Brady promptly set up this cozy spot for himself on the floor behind the couch b/c of course he wanted to be like Dada, but the joke was on him because he actually fell asleep! We have been laying Brady down for an afternoon nap less & less often these days, so this was a fun sight to see.

Words cannot express how happy these next two pictures make me! Shelby has big plans to run cross country again in the fall, and Hadley is jumping on the bandwagon, too! So thankful to have built-in running buddies!

{Hadley gave herself her first French manicure! Brought back lots of memories of all the time I spent doing my nails like this!}

{and this was today!}

Slow summer days with these three are such a gift!
