Easter 2025

We kicked off our Easter fun by dyeing eggs together!

Our Easter Sunday was filled with joy--opening Easter baskets, attending church as a family, Hadley's baptism, serving at church, Easter crafts, and an {outdoor!!!} Easter egg hunt to round out the day!

What a gift to be able to celebrate Resurrection Sunday & Hadley's baptism on a beautiful spring day in Alaska--we are so, so thankful!

2025 Book Post #2

My Reads

By Any Other Name by Lauren Kate: In full disclosure, when I went to put By Any Other Name on hold at the library, I was actually looking for the book {with the same exact title!} by Jodi Picoult. I ended up putting both books on hold. I started reading the one by Jodi Picoult, but I just couldn't get into it. I very rarely stop reading a book once I start it, but this was one of those few times for me. I did read Lauren Kate's By Any Other Name, which is kind of a bookish romance. It was just okay for me--nothing too special.

The Outlaw Noble Salt by Amy Harmon: I heard of this book on a bookstagram account that I follow, and it was a big win for me! It's kind of historical fiction meets romance.

Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty: I have read a few of Liane Moriarty's books in the past, but it has been a while. This is her newest book, and I've never read anything like it before--I really enjoyed it!

The Burnout by Sophie Kinsella: If you like Sophie Kinsella, you'll like this one!

Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine, and Murder of a President by Candice Millard: Read this one immediately!! This is non-fiction account of the assassination of President Garfield that reads like the most compelling story you've ever heard. I admittedly knew very little about Garfield, and I kept having to stop throughout the book to share tidbits of what I was reading to Derek & the kids. It was truly so, so good. When I finished the book, I immediately looked up the rest of Candice Millard's books. I'm eager to read more of her work!

The Life List by Lori Nelson Spielman: When Derek was out of town recently, I watched a movie called The Life List on Netflix. At the end of the movie, it said it was based on a book by the same title. I can't remember ever watching a movie first and then reading the book--I'm a firm believer of book first and that the book is always better! But in this case, I watched the movie first & it was way better than the book! So my vote would be to skip the book altogether & just watch the movie!

Read-Alouds
The Mona Lisa Vanishes
 by Nicholas Day: I read this book aloud to all three kids, and all four of us loved it! It is non-fiction that reads likes a narrative--so, so good!

The Turtle of Michigan by Naomi Shihab Nye: Brady & I read this together as part of our homeschool curriculum. This book is actually a sequel to The Turtle of Oman, which we had never read. This book was just okay in our opinion--not enough substance or action in the plot for our taste.

Thirst
 by Varsha Bajaj: This was another book Brady & I read aloud together during homeschool. The novel is set in Mumbai & the main characters have limited access to clean water. I have never read a book about this topic, so it was very interesting & inspired a lot of conversation.

March 2025

With March officially in the rear view mirror, it's so surreal to think we only have three full months left in Alaska. Time is flying! Highlights of March for us included: Hadley's Honor Band concert, Spring Break in Kauai & Oahu, Hadley's 12th birthday, the Alaska State Spelling Bee, lots of other musical performances & rehearsals for the girls, and more indoor soccer for Brady!

The first day of March was a Saturday, and Derek was still in San Diego wrapping up the tail end of his allergy conference....so Hadley was on pancake duty! And then it was off to our happy place--the library!

{March in Alaska does not usually look like this!}

{school band concert}

{cutie boys reading together while we waited for the concert to begin}

Hadley was so thrilled to be selected as the first chair clarinet player for our district's Honor Band. She also got to stand on her chair during the concert & perform a solo, which she was particularly excited for!

{Two days after we got home from Hawaii, we got snow! We were thrilled! Crazy to think that might have been our last real snow here. Our previous two Aprils in Alaska we were still digging out from snow, but now all of our sidewalks are bare & it's hit 50 degrees already!}

{handwork while I read aloud to them before bed}

{Shelby playing the piano accompaniment for the beginning orchestra concert}

Shelby participated in the Alaska State Spelling Bee for the second year in a row, and she came in fifth place out of the top 75 spellers state-wide. It was a bittersweet ending for sure. We are immensely proud of Shelby's preparation, poise, commitment, and drive. And what an absolute joy it is to watch your kids find their "thing" and get to cheer them on! This was Shelby's final year of eligibility for the Scripps Spelling Bee...it is the end of an era, and we truly enjoyed the ride with her!

{Brady & I tracked each word that was spelled during the bee!}

We had to arrive around 9:30am to check in for the bee, and it began at 10:00. There was a 90 minute break around noon, so we had a quick lunch in the car and headed to the library...and threw the football around for a bit until it was time for Shelby to get back on stage!

And once the bee ended around 4pm, it was straight to the next event...a jazz band festival! Shelby was fortunate to have the opportunity to play on a grand piano for this performance, and it was outstanding!

{I love spending my days with this guy!}

{Advanced Orchestra Large Group Festival}

{my built-in running buddy!}

We are eager to see what April has in store for us!
