Christmas Card Tree

This is my new favorite decoration at Christmastime...
I learned about the concept of a card tree last year on someone's blog and liked the idea, so I decided to give it a whirl this year since we had an extra artificial tree. (We purchased a new one last year the day after Christmas, which we used as our main Christmas tree. We used our older tree for our card tree and put it up in the kitchen.) We proudly displayed each of the Christmas cards we received this year on our tree in the place of ornaments, and I love-love-love looking at the tree each day while I'm in the kitchen and seeing the people I love. It makes my heart happy! The presents under the tree are now gone, but I am not anywhere ready to take this tree down! I will definitely be having a card tree again next year! :)

Wordless Wednesday: The Best Sound in the World

Happy Wednesday! :)
{I had told Shelby not to do something...and now I can't even really remember what it was I told her not to do..but I would guess it probably had something to do with not sticking her slobbery hand in my face, which she does all.the.time. But when I told her "don't do it," she started smiling and giggling up a storm. This may not be such a good sign for later in life...I tell my daughter not to do something, and she laughs at me! ;) But for now, I cannot think of a better sound in the whole world.}

Christmas in Biloxi

We celebrated Shelby's first Christmas here in Biloxi. Derek was on wards for the month of December (which means he's on call every fourth night), so he couldn't take leave. But we will be able to head back to GA after the New Year to spend a little time at home. We were sad to miss Georgia's first white Christmas in over 100 years though! But we weren't sad for too long b/c we remembered that we had more than our fair share of snow (remember the Blizzard of 2009 and SNO.M.G. in February of 2010) last year in DC..actually I think we had enough snow to last us a lifetime!

This is the first time in my life (at least that I can remember!) that I haven't spent Christmas at home in GA or up in St. Louis (where my mom and dad's side of the family is), so we were thrilled that my parents and sister offered to come join us in Biloxi! It certainly made it feel a little more like home...and I'm pretty sure they enjoyed getting some baby time!
Due to work schedules, it had to be a short visit. They were scheduled to leave Christmas afternoon. So my mom made a yummy Christmas Eve dinner, and then we opened presents that night.
Then on Christmas morning, we opened our stockings. (My parents made an impromptu stocking out of a gift bag for my sister, so she could open her stocking stuffers with us.)
After opening stockings we ate a big breakfast cooked on Derek's new griddle, then my family had to hit the road back to GA. We cleaned up the mess from Christmas and caught up on laundry while Shelby napped. When she woke up, we bundled her up and hit the road as well..but we we were on the road to look at Christmas lights! :)
But the best light display of all was right in our very own neighborhood! Down the street from us, there is a house that has lights synchronized to music for a 30 minute show! It was quite impressive!
All in all, it was a wonderful Christmas! But we can't wait to go home and celebrate more with our families in a few days! We hope you and your family are enjoying this special time of year together as well!

Merry Christmas!

What a difference a year makes...

This time last year (links to our snow pictures from last year!), we were buried under feet of snow in Virginia waiting with anticipation to see if my district would close schools so we could head home to GA to celebrate Christmas....

Now, I'm sitting here in 77 degree weather with a baby in my arms waiting on my family to come join us in Biloxi for Christmas! What a difference a year makes!

Lovin' on Shelby

Shelby got a visit from her BooBoo and PopPop (Derek's mom & step-dad) this weekend.
There is nothing sweeter than seeing the love of grandparents!
We had a short but sweet visit with them. Unfortunately, Derek was on call and missed out on the fun. But who are we kidding, they didn't come for Derek...they came to love on their grandbaby! :)

We also had the privilege of having two of our dearest friends stop by for a a visit last night as they were making the trek from Texas to Georgia for Christmas. We were thrilled to get to introduce them to Shelby for the first time. I can't believe I didn't get a picture of Derek & me with Bret & Jenny...but we did get some good shots of Bret lovin' on Miss Shelby!
Do you think this guy is gonna make a good Daddy one day, or what?!
After Shelby went to bed, we had the best time visiting just the four of us. The past three months with Shelby have been wonderful, but it was nice to feel like our old selves for just a couple of hours with old friends. Last night was good for our souls. There is just nothing like laughing and spending quality time with people who really know you and love you. We really enjoy the military life and all that it entails--moving around and getting the opportunity to explore new places and meet new people, but nothing can hold a candle to the comforts of home, family, and old friends.

3 Months Old!

Happy 3 Month Birthday, Baby Girl!
We can hardly believe you are already 3 months old! You're still so little, but when I was looking back through your other monthly birthday photos it made you seem so big! It seems as though your little chunky rolls are just multiplying by the month! :) Here's what Shelby is up to these days...
--TAKING NAPS!! For those of you who may not know, Shelby has fought naps tooth and nail since we brought her home from the hospital. Usually she would only nap for 5 minutes here and there throughout the day or sleep in my arms making for a very exhausted Mommy. She is now taking 3 naps a day that are usually 1.5-2 hours long. HALLELUJAH!
--sleeping much better at night! She usually sleeps for a solid 8 hour stretch at first at night. We put her down around 8pm and she only wakes up once to nurse (and I'll say it again...HALLELUJAH!) around 4am. I put her back down a little before 5, and she'll be in a light sleep until about 7 or 8am.
--still taking Prevacid for her acid reflux, and it's finally starting to really help. She's still a little fussy after eating...but it's so much better than it was before! The only real complaint we have is spitting up. She spits up all.the.time. I must admit it gets a little frustrating to have to change her clothes and my clothes so frequently, but it doesn't seem to affect her temperament at all so for that I am thankful!
--loves to make eye contact with us and will follow us around the room if we walk away.
--smiling and talking more and more...especially when she should be nursing. She'd rather talk than eat...although you'd never know it based on how quickly she puts on the weight!
--one of her favorite things to do is to try to stand up. We'll hold her up in our lap, and she'll stand on her feet and stare into our faces. It's so cute!
--we can still fit into a handful of her 3 month jammies, but other than that we're wearing all 6 month clothes now! I've gone ahead and starting buying 9 month pants though...they're a little too long for her still, but her little belly needs the extra room! (According to her daddy, we're trying to avoid the "muffin top.")

Thanks for checking in with us! Wishing you a very happy weekend! Can you believe it's the last weekend before Christmas?! Where does the time go????

Feeling Appreciated

One of the hardest parts about leaving VA to move to Biloxi was leaving behind all of my former students. One of my favorite parts about being a Kindergarten teacher is getting to watch the kids grow up throughout elementary school...and when they come back to visit or pass me in the halls and let me love on them a bit. I always loved when they would say: "I wish I was still in Kindergarten!" :)

But even though I can't see my kiddos anymore, I've gotten lots of letters and cards in the mail from them since moving here. Then this past week, I got a sweet note from a former student...and her mom included a $50 Visa gift card for me!! I was totally shocked...how thoughtful and generous! Definitely made me feel loved and appreciated..and made me miss my job this morning just a bit more than usual. But then I remembered how hectic Monday mornings always were setting up new centers for the week, getting lessons prepared, answering emails...and I can't even imagine trying to do that right now and be a good mommy to this precious little girl.

I heart Biloxi!

We had been planning to take Shelby to the mall here in Biloxi to have her picture taken with Santa. Derek wanted to be there for the big event, but his only day off was Saturday. We were pretty nervous about taking her to the mall on a Saturday in December b/c we assumed there would be crowds and long lines...not a good combination for a 10 week old. But there was no traffic, no crowds, and a total of two people in front of us in line to meet Santa...gotta love Biloxi! :) Well, without further ado, here's Shelby & Mr. Claus!
Shelby did great with Santa! Since she's still so young, she's happy as long as someone is holding her...even if it is a strange man in a red suit! And she even looked at the camera..yay! :)

Shelby's First Babysitter

Eek..it doesn't feel like all that long ago that I was the one doing the babysitting! It felt so strange to be asking our neighbor's teenage daughter to come babysit for us. I was beyond to nervous to leave Shelby for the first time (we've left her before...but only with my mom or dad in her care, which isn't really like leaving her at all)...I was talking a mile a minute trying to give the babysitter more information than she would ever need to know. I was so busy frantically relaying information that I realized a few miles down the road that I didn't even kiss my baby goodbye! Aahh! I wanted to turn around and go back, but Derek promptly looked at me like I was crazy. :)
We were so worried about leaving Shelby, but we timed it perfectly. I nursed Shelby right before the babysitter came over, and Shelby fell asleep in the babysitter's arms before we even got out the door! Shelby was asleep the entire time we were at Derek's hospital Christmas party. It felt so nice to get out and socialize for a few hours, but we sure were happy to see our baby girl when we got home!

Lessons in Motherhood

I came across this video on another blog recently, and it really resonates with this season of my life.
If I could go back in time and tell myself something before Shelby was born, I would say: "cribs are overrated." :) After spending $1,000 on a crib, we realized this past week that Shelby sleeps best in her carseat. We made this realization when Shelby & I made a quick overnight trip up to Jackson to vosit Derek & see what he's been up to for the past month. On the way to Jackson, we left around 7pm (Shelby's bedtime). I figured she would sleep the 3 hours in the car, and once she woke up I planned to change her into her jammies and put her down for the night in her pack n play. Well, she didn't wake up till 4am--9 hours after she fell asleep!!! She slept for 9 hours straight in her carseat!! To help you understand what a big deal this was...prior to that, her longest stretch of sleep was only 7 hours. Naturally, we thought 9 hours was just a fluke. Well, the next night when we drove back to Biloxi she did the same thing--9 hours of sleep in her carseat! I was thrilled...I thought maybe we were turning a corner on sleeping through the night. But don't you worry..the next night when we put her down to sleep in her crib...she was back to the same ole same ole. Lesson learned...cribs aren't all they're cracked up to be! :)

In all seriousness, I will say that Derek & I have learned so much in the short 10 weeks since Shelby entered this world. Although we thought we were ready, we learned you can never really be ready for a baby. We thought the fact that one of us is a doctor and the other has a degree in education and child & family development, surely we could handle a baby..ha! :) We're now appreciating our parents in a whole new way. We have learned something new each and every day since she was born, but I know we still have lots more to learn along the way. I have a feeling that each new stage of her development will bring new challenges...but thankfully, she just gets cuter and sweeter by the day making it worth it all!

Our Turkey Day

We celebrated our first Thanksgiving as a family of 3 this year! Due to Derek's busy schedule at the hospital, we had to stay here in Biloxi for the holiday...as did some of our neighbors, so we each made a couple of dishes and celebrated together. Although we really missed being with our families, we had a nice holiday. We were especially thankful that Derek got Thanksgiving Day off--he's been out of town working at a civilian hospital in Jackson (about 3 hours away) for all of November. So it was a pleasant surprise that he got to come and spend the day with us! And I'm even more thankful that November is almost over b/c that means Derek will be coming home, & I could not be more excited about that! :) Derek & I have done the long-distance thing quite a few times throughout our relationship (Field Training right after we started dating, multiple TDY's, & most notably a year apart when Derek was in VA & I was still living in GA finishing my master's degree); so even though we don't like being apart, we are used to it. But being apart with a newborn? Now that's a whole different story! It's definitely been a long & challenging month for both of us! Thankfully my mom stayed with Shelby & me for a good portion of the month, which made things a lot easier on me. But I will be a happy, happy girl when I get my hubby back in a couple of days! And I know Shelby will be a happy baby to have her Daddy home again! :)

11.24.2010

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving, Everyone!
While you are feasting on turkey and all the trimmings tomorrow, this little girl will be feasting on her patties. She love-love-loves to suck on her hands. She does it all.day.long. And don't you just love her cute outfit for Turkey Day?! I too am very thankful for my Mama. We said goodbye to her earlier this week (I guess she had to go back to GA sometime!), and I don't know who misses her more..me or Shelby! Shelby's crying in this picture b/c she doesn't want her Grammy to go!
Do you see Shelby's cute little belly sticking out?!

Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday filled with family, friends, and good food! :)

A Change in Jobs

For those of you who may not know, for the three years we lived in Virginia I was a Kindergarten teacher. I did not look for a new teaching job when we moved to Mississippi b/c Derek and I had planned for me to stay at home once Miss Shelby arrived. Now that she's here, I am so thankful for the opportunity to stay at home with our baby girl b/c I know we will never get this sweet time with her back again.

But I would by lying if I didn't say that I missed my job. I love-love-love teaching Kindergarten. I heart five and six year-olds. There is just something about that age and their sweet innocence that is so refreshing. I love seeing the world through their eyes! However, I saw this video that someone posted on Facebook about parent-teacher conferences (and it's so true!) that reminded me that being a teacher isn't always so fun....
Now that I'm not in the classroom, I miss it more than I realize. In time, I've forgotten about all those not-so-fun parts of my job and can look back on it with nostalgia. I've forgotten about the difficult parents, the stacks upon stacks of papers to grade, the disgusting amount of work I brought home each evening & weekend...but I remember the sweet, fun moments like this and this.

Although I do miss teaching Kindergarten, I have a great new job. Now I'm spending my days loving on this sweet girl. :)

11.20.2010

Happy Baby :)

Shelby has been smiling & cooing more & more each day, and I've been desperately trying to capture it without much success. Whenever I pull out the camera, she usually stops whatever cute thing she's doing and just starts staring at the camera. But yesterday when she started smiling & cooing, I kept the camera low to hide it from her. So I apologize for the bad angle of the video, but you can still enjoy her cuteness! :)

Happy Weekend, Everyone!

Two Months Old!

This sweet little girl turned two months old yesterday!
We had her two month check-up today at the pediatrician, and we learned this little girl is certainly not having any trouble with growing! She weighs 13 pounds & 2 ounces, which puts her in the 99th percentile. (Just to put things in perspective, she was only in the 50th percentile the last time we went to the doctor at her 2 week check-up.) She measured 23.5 inches, which puts her in the 95th percentile. So we have a big girl on our hands!

Along with Shelby's two month check-up today, she also had 3 shots & an oral vaccination. Shelby was an angel the whole time at the doctor's office and only cried for just a second with the shots. But once we got home, she started getting really fussy and running a low-grade fever because of the shots. We just now got some tylenol infant drops for her...so we're hoping that will help. I just hate seeing my little girl in pain. It's been a rough day for both of us...I'm so thankful my mom was here to help with it all!

On another note, Shelby was diagnosed last week with acid reflux and started taking medicine for it. Unfortunately, we haven't seen any improvements yet. So the pediatrician prescribed something new for Shelby today...I certainly hope this medicine kicks in soon!
Here's what Shelby is up to these days...
--smiling & cooing...and it's the sweetest.thing.ever.
--
loves to grab a hold of things...the hair or shirt of whoever is holding her at the time, her pacifier, anything she can grasp in her fist!
--still likes to find lights and stare at them...lights in the ceiling, lamps, light from the tv, etc.
--fights naps tooth & nail...she takes a few cat naps each day. If we hold her, she'll sleep for-ev-er, but if I put her down for a nap it only lasts for a couple of minutes
--sleeping much better at night! She usually goes down around 7ish, and her first stretch of sleep is the longest at 4-6 hours most nights. After that, she sleeps in short 1-2 hour stretches...we're hoping that will get better with age!
--holding her head up more & more
--wearing 3 month & 6 month clothes

Thanks for checking in with us and caring enough to read about our sweet baby girl. :)

Shelby's First Trip to GA!

Right after Halloween, Shelby, my mom (who had been in Biloxi visiting/helping us), and I hit the road for GA. Sadly, Derek didn't get to join us b/c he was busy with work, but we had a fun time visiting with family & friends and experiencing GA for the first time with Miss Shelby!

One of the most challenging aspects of this trip (aside from traveling 400 miles in a car with a newborn!) was preparing for the weather! We left blue skies & temps in the mid-seventies in Biloxi for chilly, rainy weather in GA. Shelby had very little clothing for cold weather, and I hadn't worn jeans or anything with long sleeves since before I was pregnant...so I had no clue what even fit me! Needless to say, this was a challenging trip to pack for! Here's a photo of my sweet girl sporting some of her winter wear...
Thank you Lin & Nathan for the cute long sleeve onesies..we've gotten a lot of use out of them already!
We took Shelby up to my dad's dealership, and Grampy thoroughly enjoyed showing off his sweet grandbaby to everyone there! I think it's safe to say that Shelby is a very loved little girl. :)
We visited with Shelby's BooBoo & PopPop one evening...here they are loving on her!
They brought me dinner from Longhorn's and cheesecake from none other than Cheesecake Factory, which was such a treat b/c we don't have a Cheesecake Factory in Biloxi (or anywhere near us for that matter)...they certainly know the way to their daughter-in-law's heart! :)

Shelby & I took a trip to McDonough one day to spend the day with Auntie Em at her apartment...
We also spent one day with Shelby's Grandad & Grandma while we were in town. Unfortunately I didn't get any pictures of our time with them, but we had a very nice visit! We also introduced Miss Shelby to several of our family's friends while we were in town..so we were busy, busy, busy!

On another note, today is Shelby's two month birthday! I will try to do her two month post after her doctor's appointment tomorrow...so check back in soon! Happy Wednesday, everyone!

11.15.2010

Better late than never...

I just realized today that I never shared Shelby's birth announcement with the blogging world! So without further ado, here it is....
Although we may be a little biased, we were so pleased with how it turned out! I ordered the announcements from Tiny Prints (I also ordered our change of address announcements from them this summer), and they offer canvas prints of your cards...so I'm thinking of possibly ordering a canvas print of the announcement for her nursery..we'll see!

I'll try to get a post up about our trip to GA later this week...hope everyone is having a happy Monday! It's a rainy one here in Biloxi, but my flowers sure are enjoying it! (And saying that just made me feel so.old.)

True Life: Hallowen with a Baby

Okay, please bear with me as we travel back in time...to Halloween 2010. Derek & I were so excited to dress Shelby up in the costume that Derek's mom had gotten for us before she was born. We were so excited about this Halloween..it was our first Halloween as a family of 3, and it was our first Halloween with trick-or-treaters! We never had a single trick-or-treater in the 3 years we lived in Virginia, so we were so excited to experience Halloween on base.

One of my friends Cindy (who is an Air Force wife as well...and who I miss so much!) had always told me that living on base is like a throw-back to the fifties..and that analogy is certainly true for Keesler AFB. Our neighborhood is filled with sweet families, and the parents all feel safe enough to let their kids play and ride their bikes to school unsupervised. People don't feel the need to keep their doors locked at all times, and neighbors feel free to just "come on in." It's a very nice change of pace from living in Northern Virginia (although we did love our little life there, too!). I say all this to help you understand why we were so excited about Halloween...it was such a sweet night filled with families walking door to door with their precious kids. I've never seen so many trick-or-treaters!

Anyhow, back to my point of how excited we were about dressing Shelby up for her first Halloween. Well, she had other plans for us. It was, in all honesty, the roughest day of her short 6 weeks of life. She literally cried and screamed all.day.long. It was so hard on her and us. Needless to say, she didn't get to wear her costume. :( So we were very thankful that we did a little Halloween photo shoot with Shelby a few weeks ago when we were trying to get a photo for our Halloween card. So here's a pic of Derek & Shelby in their matching scrubs from back in September when she was about 1.5 weeks old. :)
Oh.my.gosh. I can't get over how tiny she looks in this picture!
Despite all of the crying, we were able to enjoy the trick-or-treaters and some yummy cupcakes that I made!
Although we really wanted a sweet family photo of our first Halloween together, that just wasn't in the stars. So here's the only picture we were able to capture!
And we know next year when we do get to dress Shelby up, we'll look back on her first Halloween and laugh.

Home Again, Home Again, Jiggity-Jog

Sorry for being MIA the past couple of weeks! Right after Halloween, we loaded up the car to make the trek to GA. It was Shelby's first road trip, and I was so thankful my mom made the drive with me. I don't think Shelby & I would have survived that 400 mile trip without her. We learned that a six hour drive + a six week old baby = a nine hour drive. But we survived, and we had a great time taking Shelby to GA for her first of many visits. And I'm happy to report the drive back to Biloxi yesterday went much smoother. I'll try to catch you up on our trip & our life the past couple of weeks in the next few blog posts, so check back in soon!

And last but not least...Happy Belated Veterans Day to all those who have served our country--past & present! I am proud to be the daughter of an Army veteran and an Air Force wife!

10.31.2010

Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween from the Smith Family!
(The photo on our Halloween card was taken when Shelby was about a week and a half old.)

10.30.2010

Who does she look like?

Does Shelby look like her Mommy?
Or her Daddy?
Right now, Shelby's a red-head like her mama, & she's got pretty blue eyes like her daddy. We're anxious to see if the red hair & blue eyes will stick around, or if the colors will change.

On a completely unrelated note, GO DAWGS!!!

10.27.2010

Bragging

Please indulge me for a moment while I brag on my hubby. I always knew he was a good husband, but now I'm learning what a good daddy he is, too. And he has proved he is quite the doctor as well.
In case you couldn't tell, those are his test results from the boards proudly hanging on the fridge. Last year, he scored in the 99th percentile on Step 2...and he scored in the 99th percentile yet again on Step 3! :) Look how excited Shelby is about her daddy's scores!
Okay, this is really just the cute face she makes when she's having fun on her activity mat, but we'll pretend this face was for her daddy's scores. ;)

10.23.2010

One Month Old!

It's hard to believe, but Shelby is already one month old! She has grown so much in the past month! Her little belly is already getting too big for her newborn/0-3 month clothes..we're mostly wearing 3 month clothes b/c they're much easier to put on/take off.
Here's what she's up to these days...
--holding her head up more & more
--rolling over from her tummy to her back
--likes to find lights and stare at them
--enjoys spending a few minutes at a time on her activity mat and tries to hit her toys
--makes the cutest little monkey sounds when she's happy/excited..hopefully we'll be able to capture it on video soon!
--looks at us while we talk or reads books to her and is starting to respond to our voices more
--sleep is still hard to come by for us at night, but her cuteness during the day makes up for it!

We can't wait to see how much she grows and changes in the next month!

Grammy's Brag Book

Shelby and I are thrilled to say that Grammy is back with us in Biloxi! :) She arrived on Wednesday to come love on Shelby and give me some relief. Derek is on wards this month and on call pretty frequently, so I am very appreciative of the extra help and quality time with my mom! As a small token of our appreciation, we made Grammy her very own Brag Book so she can show off her sweet grandbaby when she gets back home. Feel free to take a peek at the photo book I made on Shutterfly..hope you enjoy it! :)

Shelby's Birth Story

Shelby's due date was September 8th. Well, that day came & went with no Shelby! When I went in for my 41 week appointment on September 14th, there was still no sign of a baby coming any time soon. I hadn't had a single contraction (Braxton Hicks or real) nor was I dilated at all. (They estimated at my 39 week appointment that I was dilated somewhere between 1 & 2 centimeters...and I never progressed beyond that. They estimated I was between 1 & 2 cm at my 40 & 41 week appointments as well.)
These are the last photos taken of me when I was pregnant..although we didn't know they would be the last! My mom & sister came into town on September 12th in anticipation of Shelby's arrival (I was already 4 days past my due date upon their arrival). At my 41 week appointment, they scheduled a non-stress test for me on Friday, September 17th to make sure all was well with little Shelby; assuming all would be well at this appointment, they went ahead and scheduled me for an induction on Monday, September 20th. Since my pregnancy had been as smooth as humanly possible (no morning sickness, no cravings/food aversions, virtually no complaints whatsoever to speak of!), we had every reason to believe that the non-stress test would be very anti-climatic and that this baby would be coming into the world via induction on the 20th.

On the morning of the 17th, my sister headed back to GA for work since there were still no signs that Shelby would be coming into the world just yet. After my sister hit the dusty trail, we went to the hospital for my non-stress test at 10:30am. My mom, dad, & Derek all came along for the appointment. The appointment was supposed to be pretty quick, and we had made plans to go to the grand opening of the new event center here on base that afternoon. Little did we know, we would not be leaving the hospital! ;)

Upon arriving to the hospital, the nurses hooked me up to the fetal heart monitors to administer the non-stress test. This is a routine test done when babies are late. They check to see if the baby's heart rate increases a certain number of times within a certain time frame...but baby Shelby didn't want to play. Her heart rate was just constant, so they had me drink some cold water to get her moving. When that didn't work, they gave me some OJ...and then some apple juice. Then Shelby suddenly became super active, and her heart rate was going up, down, up, down, etc. Looking back, I should have realized something was wrong b/c at first there was just 1 or 2 nurses in the room. Then, nurse after nurse was coming in to look at the monitors, then they were asking for the doctor to come look. The doctor on call that day had never seen a baby react that way to a non-stress test, so he called the high-risk OB doctor to ask her opinion. She had never seen anything like it either, and they didn't like the fear of the unknown. At this point, I was feeling kind of confused and nervous...but I just kept thinking, this had been such an smooth pregnancy..everything must be fine.

The doctor quickly moved us to another room to do an ultrasound to check the amniotic fluid levels. In the middle of the ultrasound, the doctor randomly asked me when the last time I ate was. When he asked me the question, I thought he was just being nice b/c my tummy had started to growl during the ultrasound. :) Derek later told me he knew at that point we were going to have a C-section b/c they don't like you to have eaten before surgery. The doctor then explained that there are 4 quadrants for amniotic fluid...I only had a teeny bit of fluid in one of the 4 quadrants. The doctor told us he recommended we go ahead with an emergency C-section at that point b/c they were concerned there might be something wrong with Shelby's heart, and she might have to be transferred to a different hospital (Keesler's hospital hasn't had a NICU since Hurricane Katrina) immediately following delivery.

At this point, the tears were flowing b/c I was terrified. But I was feeling a bit relieved that we would have some time before surgery due to the fact that not only had I eaten breakfast before my appointment..but I'd also had juice during the non-stress test...so I thought there would be at least a couple of hours to wrap my brain around everything before going into the OR. I was wrong. I never even had a chance to talk to Derek or my parents about what was happening before they were handing me a gown and starting my IV (which was the most painful part of the whole thing...they could not find a vein for anything, and I came away with several bruises because of it!).
This photo was taken right before going to the OR..I was not happy to be having my picture taken at the time! I still had a tissue in my hand from wiping away tears.
When they finally got my IV going--which took about 45 minutes!!--they quickly took Derek & me back to the OR. It took them a while to get my spinal tap in, and while they were doing that I just kept looking around the room. I was just so scared...there were so many doctors & nurses, and everything was just happening so fast. I know Derek hated it too...being a doctor and having no control over what was going on with his wife and baby. But once they got the spinal tap in, everything went into high gear. I remember laying down and looking at Derek and asking him to tell me when they started. He looked at me confused, and I said: "Ya know? Like tell me when they start making the incision." Again, he looked confused..then replied: "Sarah, it's almost over now." I barely felt anything..just a little tug here and there..then suddenly I heard a baby screaming. It was the best sound in the world. After being so worried there might be something wrong with her, it was so relieving to hear her cry!
The nurses let Derek hold Shelby for a minute & I got a quick look at her in his arms; then they whisked her away while we finished up in the OR. My dad was waiting back in our hospital room, and suddenly the nurses brought a baby in the room. My dad greeted them by saying: "I guess this means I'm a grandpa now?" :) So Grampy was the first one to greet her!
We got to the hospital that morning at 10:30, went to the OR a little before 1:00, and Shelby was born at 1:31pm. It was a fast-paced day, that's for sure! Never in a million years did I think we'd be having a baby that day, and never in a million years did I think I'd be having an emergency C-section..but it all turned out wonderfully in the end. When the pediatrician came in to talk to us, he didn't have a concern in the world for Shelby. The doctors have no idea why Shelby's heart acted the way it did in the hours leading up to her birth, but thankfully she came out perfectly healthy! Shelby definitely made us wait for her and gave us quite the scare there at the end, but she was certainly worth it all. We love you, Shelby!
