Art Show & Regional Spelling Bee

Back in January, Shelby won a local spelling bee. As a result, she advanced to the regional bee. Unfortunately, the regional bee fell on the same day as our school's annual Art Show. {It also happened to be the day of Shelby's first two flag football games of the season, but we had to miss them.} We divided & conquered--Derek took Shelby to the Spelling Bee in New Braunfels while the rest of us prepped for the Art Show. The first part of the Spelling Bee was a written vocabulary and spelling assessment. The test was administered orally, so Derek was able to hear everything--he said it was crazy hard. After a lunch break, the results were posted with the participants that would be advancing to the traditional oral bee. Out of about 125 participants, nineteen kids moved on...and Shelby was one of them! She ended up tying for sixth place with one other participant. The 14 year old girl who won the bee advanced to the National Bee held in Washington, D.C. in May, and she won! So needless to say, the competition at our regional bee was fierce! Shelby had so much fun, and she was pleased with her performance! She is already eager to participate in another bee.

Our school hosts the Art Show at the fellowship hall of the church across the street. These two cuties hung out in the storage area of the church while the teachers were setting up, then we walked around so they could see their hard work on display!

Derek & Shelby raced back to the Art Show as fast as they could, but it was already 75% broken down by the time they arrived. She couldn't have cared less though, she was still smiling ear to ear with pride & joy as she walked into the church!
