Today is the first day of June! As I type this, it is currently cloudy with a high of 53 and a chance of rain later this afternoon. We keep saying every single day, "Are we ever going to see the sun shine again?!" But that hasn't stopped the kids from playing outside with friends! I feel like we are in such a weird but wonderful phase with the girls gaining more independence. As I mentioned before, the neighborhood we live in here is a planned community with the school situated within the neighborhood. So for the first time in their lives {this is also a first for Derek & me, too!}, every single one of their school friends is within walking or biking distance of our house. After breakfast this morning, Hadley hopped off on her bike in one direction & Shelby took off in the opposite direction on her bike. And they'll meet us back home for dinner tonight. Our neighborhood in Texas was so small that even if the kids went as far as they could from our house in the neighborhood, they were still close by. This is a whole new world for us here. I miss the simple summer days where they were on the floor in the living room building with magnatiles or playing across the street, but I know this is stretching each of us in amazing ways!
On May 23rd, we celebrated the last day of 1st, 4th, and 6th grade! We are ready for summer...even though it doesn't feel like it here quite yet! ;)
And here's a look back at our first day picture from August....we didn't have our household goods delivered yet, so no cute signs to hold!
The first official day of summer was chilly and drizzly, but the kids enjoyed a game of Monopoly, a trip to Soda N Smore, a visit to our favorite library downtown, and Shelby's first piano lesson with a new teacher.
{the kids love watching the book return machine at this library!}
Brady pulled his front tooth one morning and is now sporting a new smile! :)
Over the long Memorial Day Weekend, we visited Otter Lake on base & rented pedal boats. We saw {and heard!} lots of loons and swans, which was especially fun since Brady & I just finished reading
The Trumpet of the Swan together. It was gorgeous there!
We also drove down toward Seward another day over Memorial Day Weekend to visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center for the first time. The drive to Seward is absolutely beautiful! On our way out of Anchorage, we saw that all of the traffic was suddenly stopping on both sides of the highway. A mama & baby moose safely crossed 8 lanes of traffic! The mama jumped over the guardrail when she made it to the opposite side, but the baby was too little/unsteady on her feet to hop over and had to walk around to catch up with its mom. It was such a fun thing to see!
{Hadley & Brady are both all in on Garfield lately}
And that's a wrap on the month of May! We are excited for what June will bring!
