Burg Eltz

 Hello everyone!
Today was my first official day off so I decided to go on an adventure. One of the doctors at Keesler who had been stationed at Landstuhl recommended Burg Eltz, one of the castles in the region and the only castle that has been continually inhabited for the past 700years! I did some research on the train schedule and planned the 3hr train ride to the closest town to the castle. The train ride was pretty nice and the region is loaded with vineyards.

The river valley was lined with vineyards

Not a very impressive train station that welcomed me...
But the town was quaint and very German...grapes were falling from the vines in the street
What a nice place to live...
After a 3 mile hike, this was a very welcome sight!

The main entrance to the castle
The inner courtyard

The chapel in the master bedroom couldn't be in the regular floor plan. Its poor form to have a chapel in the regular floor plan because the floors above the chapel would let people be "above" God.
The armory...the first and last picture I took inside the castle...before I was politely asked to stop.
Outside wall with collection of boulders that were hurled in the castle during the attempted siege in the 13th century.

From this side, you can see how the castle was built on the top of a rocky hill
I had a nice late lunch at the cafe where I had bratwurst and beer. Afterwards, I hiked the three miles back to the train station on Moselkern and took the 3hr train ride back to Landstuhl. It was quite a day of traveling, but it was an amazing sight and I'm glad that I decided to go on the adventure!

I'll let you know the next time I go on an adventure!
